1. During the week of a holiday, when will trash be collected?

When a holiday falls on a weekday, all collections for that day will be collected on the following day and all collections for the remainder of the week are delayed one day.

Holidays observed by the City of Cincinnati are:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidents' Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veteran's Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

2. What items can be recycled?

  • Newspapers, telephone books and magazines
  • Brown paper grocery bags and corrugated cardboard
  • (flattened and fold into pieces no bigger than 2' x 2')
  • Clear, green, blue & brown glass
  • Aluminum cans, steel food cans (rinsed out and push lid down inside can); steel aerosol cans (remove lids and empty all product out)
  • Plastic with a #1 or #2 on the bottom or side of container
  • Soda, milk shampoo, detergent and small mouth drink bottles (rinse and remove lids)

3. I live in an apartment--can I recycle?

Most residents of apartment buildings with 9 units or less are eligible for recycling. Please call the Recycling Hotline, 242-4600, for more details.

4. I just moved to Cincinnati and would like to recycle, how can I get a green bin?

5. What time may I put out my trash or large bulky items?

Trash, large bulky items, yard waste and recycling items may be placed at the curb no sooner than 5:00 p.m., the evening before and no later than 6:00 a.m. the day of collection.

6. When is recyclable material and yard waste collected?

Yard Waste and recyclable material is collected on the same day as your trash collection.

7. Who do I call for potholes?

Call 591-6000 and provide them with the location, size and depth and exact location of the pothole (inbound, outbound, curb lane, center lane, etc.)

8. There is a street light out on my street, who do I call?

Call 591-6000 and provide them with the type of request and exact location. A referral will be made to the Traffic Engineering Division for assessment of the request.

10. Street needs to be cleaned.

Call 591-6000 and provide them with the street name. Every street in Cincinnati is swept a minimum of four times a year. Scheduled dates are arranged through the Sanitation Division, although hazardous, emergency type requests are serviced immediately.

11. Street needs to be repaired/resurfaced.

Call 591-6000 and provide them with the exact location and the type of problem. If there is a safety issue, issues that are reported and assessed to be a hazard will be made safe within 24 hours of the call. Otherwise, the Customer Service Section will forward the request for service to the appropriate agency for assessment.

12. What are regulation containers?

Containers for combustible waste and for non-combustible waste shall be of substantial construction, with tight-fitting lids, water tight, and of such size as to be easily handled by one person.
 
Plastic bag liners may be used for the disposal of combustible waste if they are of heavy duty quality and securely fastened at the opening when placed at the curb for collection.

13. What about collection of bulky items?

Up to 3 bulk items, such as furniture and mattresses, carpet (bundled and tied in 4' x 2' rolls), wood (bundled no more than 4' long and 10 lbs maximum).

Does not include: auto parts, dirt, asphalt, sand, hot ashes, demolition debris, concrete, gravel, rock asbestos.

Appliances and large metal items need to be scheduled prior to collection by calling 591-6000. This special collection will include up to 3 large items per week, but scheduled according to date availability.

14. What are businesses allowed to set out?

Cincinnati businesses may put out up to 5 containers of solid waste for weekly collection.

15. Can medical waste be collected?

Medical waste should be identified. Medical facilities must use red plastic bags or other OSHA recommended labels. Syringes must be placed in SHARPS containers or other non-penetrable containers.
