Beginning in April 2009, cases of a novel form of H1N1 Influenza, originally called the “Swine Flu”, were detected in the United States and Mexico. By June 2009, the World Health Organization declared that H1N1 Influenza was a Pandemic, meaning it was a novel Influenza for which most individuals do not have immunity, is easily spread person to person, and is circulating throughout the world. With school back in session and the arrival of flu season, the number of H1N1 flu cases will continue to rapidly increase.
The Cincinnati Health Department is monitoring the situation and is committed to providing accurate and timely public health information to the general public. We are in constant communication with public health partners at the local, state, federal and global levels. We are also in contact with hospitals, schools and health professionals in the city ensuring they have the latest guidance on vaccination and how to treat the virus.
