Park Description

Land from Daniel Drake Park, located on Redbank Road opposite Onondago Avenue in Kennedy Heights, was purchased in 1957 and named that year by the Board of Park Commissioners in honor of Cincinnati's pioneer physician and scientist. The name is appropriate since Dr. Drake, in addition to following the practice of medicine and founding Cincinnati's first medical college, was a student of the natural sciences and a great observer of southern Ohio's flora and fauna.

The original purchase, the 76.14 acre Oppliger tract, was increased in 1959 with the purchase of 11.681 acres. In 1966, part of the acreage was transferred for expressway construction and additional land, which was isolated from the park by I-71 construction, was sold in 1973, resulting in the park's current size of 66.249 acres.

Daniel Drake Park includes an attractive shelter building and children's play equipment. The stone shelter, which dramatizes the hilltop overlook, was designed by architects Arend and Arend in 1965. The geometric plan, flaring roof and rough stone recall the late work of Frank Lloyd Wright, specifically his First Unitarian Church in Madison, Wisconsin.
