The retirement plan for City of Cincinnati employees was established on August 1, 1931. It was the first retirement plan for public employees in the State of Ohio and predates the statewide Ohio Public Employees Retirement System.

The City of Cincinnati Employees Retirement System (CRS) is organized as a defined benefit plan and retiree healthcare plan. There are 7,756 participating members; (4,766 retirees and deferred retirements, 2,990 full time active members). On December 31, 2008 the CRS assets were $1.816 billion.
